Welcome to the Monkey Mountain – Affenberg!
Embark on an exciting discovery journey and explore the fascinating world of around 180 Japanese macaques! In our 4.5-hectare outdoor enclosure, you’ll be right in the middle of the animals and can observe their natural behavior up close – almost like in the wild. Watch as the monkeys play, climb, and nurture their social bonds while our guides share all the fascinating facts about these incredible animals. The ultimate highlight: with a bit of luck, you might even witness swimming and diving monkeys.

The Affenberg adventure is “only” possible with a guided tour. Why?
For safety reasons, entry into the enclosure is only allowed as part of a guided tour. Our monkeys are wild animals and live as they would in the wild. We believe that semi-free living conditions are the best for our macaques. Visitors are guests in the habitat of our monkeys, who live year-round in an open enclosure, not in cages, and are not trained.
Our animals have retreat areas that are not visible to visitors. This ensures that our monkeys can decide for themselves whether they want to join the tours or focus on other activities. We strictly adhere to animal protection laws and respect the ethical principles regarding primates.
Regular Tour
On the Tour, visitors are guided through the world of around 180 free-roaming monkeys. You will learn everything you need to know about Japanese macaques and have the chance to observe them as they behave in the wild.
The following conditions & prices apply:
- Group size: maximum 80 visitors
- Languages: German, English
- Duration: approx. 45 minutes
Adults: € 17,–
Children (age: 4 to 14 years): € 9,–
Family card (2 adults + 2 children): € 47,–
Seniors / Students: € 14,–
Handicapped adults: € 12,–
Handicapped children: € 7,–
No advance registration required/possible – it’s on a “first come, first served” basis.
Please note that during peak season, especially around midday, there may be waiting times. We recommend arriving in the morning or after 2:30 PM, as it tends to be less crowded at those times.

Low season
March 29 to June 13, 2025
- First tour: 10:00 AM, last tour: 4:00 PM
- Tours every hour on the hour
High season
June 14 to September 7, 2025
- First tour: 9:30 AM, last tour: 5:30 PM
- Tours every 20, 30, or 60 minutes, depending on visitor traffic
Low season
September 8 to November 2, 2025
- First tour: 10:00 AM, last tour: 4:00 PM
- Tours every hour on the hour
Plan your visit
The Affenberg is an outdoor experience, and entering the animals’ open-air enclosure requires certain conditions.
Therefore, it’s important to note:
- Strollers are not allowed in the monkey enclosure – however, you can borrow a baby carrier for the duration of the tour (free of charge, subject to availability, available at the tour entrance).
- We recommend weather-appropriate footwear and clothing. If it rains, you are welcome to bring umbrellas with you to the park and guided tour. If you don´t have any, we are happy to lend you some (subject to availability). Guided tours only need to be cancelled for safety reasons, in very bad weather conditions such as thunderstorms.
- Dogs are not allowed in the monkey enclosure, as they are considered a threat or enemy by the monkeys. We have four dog suites where your dog can wait for you (alone, without other dogs) during the tour (free of charge, subject to availability).
Your guide will also provide you with all safety guidelines at the beginning of your guided tour.
Private Tour
Secure the highlight of your vacation and book an exclusive Private Tour with your own guide! This way, you can spend time with the monkeys in peace, without other guests, and gain fascinating insights behind the scenes. Away from the usual paths, you’ll observe and photograph the wild animals. Since no other visitors are present, our guides can tailor the experience to your needs and interests.
The following conditions & prices apply:
- From 1 to a maximum of 10 people, including infants & children
- €210,00 per Private Tour
- Languages: German, English / Italian & Croatian upon availability
- Duration: approx. 60 minutes

Special Tour for groups & busses
For tour groups of 15 or more people, a Special Tour is required, as they cannot join regular tours. The group price for adults and children (or free participation with the Kärnten Card) applies, plus a one-time fee of €50.00 for the Special Tour with your own guide. On a Special Tour, you’ll explore the monkey enclosure with your own guide, and no other visitors will be part of the tour.
The following conditions & prices apply:
- Maximum participants per Special Tour: 80 people
- Adults: € 14.00
- Children (4-14 years): € 8.00
- One-time fee per Special Tour: € 50.00
- Free for tour guides, drivers, and teachers
- Languages: German, English / Italian & Croatian upon availability
- Duration: approx. 45 minutes
